Artisan Party Supply was started by Leah Flumerfelt in Portland, Maine between 2004 and 2024. Leah has been making luxurious paper crowns since her early days as an artist. Artists and authors Judy Novey and Lorry Stillman taught Leah a class called “Word and Image” that combined the arts of writing and book-making. The content of this class was foundational and inspirational to Leah’s lifelong career as a fiber artist working in paper and paper board. From these skills involved in the arts of book-binding and written communication evolved the design for the original “Wish Crown” or “Luxury Handmade Paper Crown”.

“Wish Crowns” contain one or more tiny, folded envelopes affixed to the inside of the crown. The envelopes are hand-cut from lokta paper from Nepal, folded, lined, and glued, and contain a special closure element. Gifters and/or wearers of the crown can fill the notecards in the envelopes with whatever they’d like - for example, words of affirmation, gratitude, hope, prayers, and friendship.

“Luxury Handmade Paper Crowns” are the second generation of crowns by Artisan Party Supply. Recognizing that crown-wearers simply love to have fun, Artisan Party Supply created the ultimate paper crown. A “Luxury Handmade Paper Crown” is the featured product produced by Artisan Party Supply. Crowns are available in magnetically adjustable-sizes to fit people of all ages. Crowns are made of flexible paperboard, lokta paper from Nepal, pH neutral PVA adhesive, and professional-grade acrylic gems and glitter. For the magnetic closure that allows adjustable sizing to any head circumference, the Luxury Handmade Paper Crowns by Artisan Party Supply contain steel shims and NdFeB (neodymium iron boron) ultra-strong magnets.

Leah developed a technique for bejeweling the crowns that involves two stages of affixing the gems in place. During the first stage, Leah creates an even coat of glue beneath each gem and glues them firmly into place. During the second stage, Leah traces each gem carefully, creating a curved bezel out of glue, and applies glitter powder to the wet glue. The bezel, once dry, holds the gems in place and creates multitudes of sparkles alongside the colorful designer-quality acrylic gems. Altogether, the technique creates a strong adhesion for the gems to the Crown to prevent gems from falling off when being dropped or bumped into things. Don’t get crowns wet, create a crease/fold in them, or peel the gems off or the metal shims or magnets out.
